TECHNO: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE

Roland TR-1000

Roland released firmware 1.50 for the TR-1000 today, so I’ve updated my cheat sheet to cover it. Originally started with firmware v1.20, then rebuilt it from the 1.50 reference manual and MIDI Implementation Chart, as well as my own use/measurements.

There are two versions:

  • Desktop: two-column layout for printing or reading on a computer or tablet.
  • Mobile: the same content sized for reading on a mobile device.

Both have a clickable table of contents, so you can jump straight to any section.

What’s new in this version

  • Everything new in firmware 1.20 and 1.50, tagged so you can see what came when. This includes the NOTE step parameter, KEYBOARD play mode for melodic playing, new menu settings and the new MFX types.
  • The MIDI section, with the single-channel note map, the Each Track Ch. note layout, and the control change numbers for every instrument.
  • A swing and shuffle chart that lines up the Cirklon and TR-1000 values with the SP-1200 and TR-909 settings. The SP-1200 and TR-909 shuffles were measured on those machines.
  • A cleaner layout, with the sections colour-coded.

One note on the swing chart: the TR-1000 values on the in-between rows are worked out by treating one shuffle unit as 1%, and Roland doesn’t document the shuffle units.
